NEXT FINLEGSIG MEETING
TUESDAY 17 APRIL 2018, 7 to 10pm
AT JOHN ALEXANDER’S PLACE NEAR TO AMSTERDAM-ZUID RAILWAY STATION
A & Q SESSION

Yes, you read this right. Not a Q & A Session but an A & Q Session.

Why? Because as translators and editors, our lovely clients stick us in at the deep end, throwing a stream of technical terms at us about which you are unsure as to whether a satisfactory translation can be found. Nevertheless, we’d like to know how it all fits together.

Take the procedural rules of Dutch courts for instance. What’s the difference between a Conclusie van antwoord and a Memorie van antwoord? What’s a Memorie na verwijzing or the Twee conclusie regel? And what is an Akte that’s presented to a court?

Gradually, as you build up experience, you get a clearer idea of how these terms fit in with the procedural rules of Dutch courts – but you wish you’d had a working understanding of these rules right from the start. So, from the answers you puzzle out to particular translation issues, you ask questions.

John Alexander will kick off the subject by talking for about 15 minutes on a particular area: A & Q’s for civil-law procedural rules prevailing in Dutch courts.

But the idea is to stimulate us all to ask the question: what are the other areas of unexplained terms that we need to translate where we’d appreciate a working understanding of how these fit together? And where can we find out more?

So, do come and contribute your ideas whether they are answers or questions. And, remember, topics are both legal and financial.

All are welcome but … there’s only space for 12 people. So please click the "Register" button at the top of this page by Sunday midnight on 15 April at the latest, to say whether you’re planning to come.

Wine & modest nibbles will, of course, be served. The exact address is Minervalaan 42/2, 1077PB Amsterdam. Unless the weather is foul, or walking isn’t your thing, the simplest route, if you’re coming from Amsterdam Zuid railway station, is to walk straight up the Minervalaan into town towards the Hilton Hotel and, after about 15 minutes, it’s on your left.
