Editing Medical/Biomedical Texts: Proofreading or Heavy Lifting? (Sponsored by SenseMed)

This meeting, sponsored by SenseMed, is designed to help editors navigate the waters when working on technically challenging medical and biomedical science papers. We’ll discuss important questions such as:

- Should I approach the job differently if my client is a PhD/medical student or the supervisor/professor?

- What are the client’s expectations?

- What will the text be used for (e.g., publication, dissertation, grant proposal, commercial applications)?

- Do I have enough background knowledge to work on this text?

During this 2-hour interactive meeting, we’ll look at some of the more challenging texts I’ve edited recently, and we’ll talk about different ways they can be tackled. And of course, we’ll leave plenty of time for swapping war stories. No advance preparation is needed.

The meeting will run from 16:30 to 18:30 (doors open at 16:00) and will be held at restaurant Se7en in Utrecht, just a short walk from Utrecht Central Station. After the meeting, I hope you’ll join us for drinks followed by dinner (both at your own cost). If you intend to stay for drinks and dinner then please let me know by mail (c.barrett@englisheditingsolutions.com) when you register so that I can reserve enough space for us at Se7en.

All current SENSE members are welcome to attend, and because this is sponsored by the SenseMed SIG, the meeting is also open to guests/prospective members. Note that space is limited, and registration will close at 10:00 on 19 February (or when we reach the maximum). To register, click the “Register” button at the top of this page (if you’re logged in, your details will be pre-entered).

I look forward to seeing you in February.
