The topic for this meeting is TEACHING WRITING TO CHINESE STUDENTS.

For quite a few years of my career as an academic writing teacher, I heard tales from colleagues about the special difficulties they faced in dealing with Chinese-speaking students. However, the institutions I worked for did not seem to attract Chinese students, so I had no practical experience with the subject. For whatever reason, this situation has changed markedly in the past two or three years, and I now encounter Chinese students in virtually every course I teach. As a result, I can definitely affirm what my colleagues were always telling me. Working with Chinese authors poses special challenges on many levels: linguistic, social, cultural, and probably others as well.

At this presentation, I’ll illustrate these points with excerpts from the writing of a number of Chinese students I’ve taught in recent years. Anyone with similar experiences or text examples of their own is more than welcome to contact me in advance, so that I can be sure to make room for you during the discussion. Hopefully, the meeting will also be of interest to editors who work with Chinese clients, even without personal interaction.

Date and Time: 9 December 2022, 16:00-17:00
