The next meeting of the SENSE Ed SIG for educators is scheduled for 2 December.

Date: Saturday, 2 December 2017
Time: 1:30 pm to 5 pm (doors open at 1 pm for coffee/tea)
Location: Park Plaza Hotel, Utrecht

The topic for this meeting of the SENSE Ed SIG is Correction.

Marking papers causes headaches for teachers on many different levels. Very often we have to adapt to marking systems imposed by the institution we work for that don’t seem to make much sense. Things get even more complicated when we are teaching a course alongside other teachers. Sometimes we don’t even have contact with some of them, yet we are still expected to do our marking in a way similar to what they would do. How reliable are the marking systems that educational institutions devise for their teachers?

At this session, we’re going to put two such systems to the test. We will evaluate two student-written assignments and grade them according to the rubrics supplied for that purpose. How similar will our results be? And, perhaps even more interestingly, do we feel that that the guidelines established by the department really give an accurate and fair reflection of students’ accomplishments?

Please feel free to bring any examples of papers that you have found difficult to mark in the past, for whatever reason. Also, if you have any special techniques or tips for marking that help you to work more efficiently, do bring them along.

I look forward to seeing you on 2 December.

Kind regards,
