Hands-on Literary Translation Workshop

Are you dying to translate a novel but never dared? Or longing to switch from academic texts to literary non-fiction, but don’t know how to get started? Sign up for this one-day intensive workshop—aimed at aspiring as well as beginning literary translators—and experience the magical lure of literary translation.

The workshop will be given by none other than SENSE member Susan Massotty. Susan is an award-winning translator and also responsible for the definitive English translation of the Diary of Anne Frank. Participants will be asked to translate two or three pages of text ahead of time. This should give rise to considerable discussion and insight.

About Susan Massotty

Susan Massotty started out her career as a technical editor and commercial translator, but switched twenty years ago to her first love: literature. Since then she has translated books by such authors as G.L. Durlacher, Anne Frank, Armando, Abdelkader Benali, Cees Nooteboom, Margriet de Moor and Kader Abdolah, as well as numerous poems, essays, short stories and scenarios. In 2007 she was awarded the Vondel Translation Prize for her translation of My Father’s Notebook by Kader Abdolah. She has had so much fun giving workshops under the auspices of the Nederlands Letterenfonds and the Expertisecentrum Literair Vertalen that she sometimes wonders if she missed her calling and should have become a teacher instead of a translator.
