14 April 2011: finlegsig meeting

Topic: Editing legal texts and translations

Date: Thursday, 14 April

Time: 19:30 to 21:30

Location:  at the offices of De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek

Contact: Stephen Machon

At this meeting, Sandra Dixon (Nauta), Marek Kruk-Strzelecki (Loyens) and Stephen Machon (De Brauw), all legal editors and members of finlegsig, will speak about the issues which concern and sometimes exercise them in their daily practice. These issues include balancing fidelity to the author's intentions with having the text actually read comfortably in English. And, what to do with a translation that misses the point, particularly when the original text misses the point. Hopefully this finlegsig meeting will provide yet another perspective on how to work with legal and financial texts.

The program for 14 April also includes

  1. further discussion/approval of Hans Warendorf and Ian Curry-Summer, translators of the Dutch Civil Code, speaking at finlegsig's meeting tentatively scheduled for 22 September
  2. obtaining PE credits and attendance certificates
  3. any other business.
